The Clue Remake Could Totally Be Rated R
Even though Clue (or as it's known internationally, Cluedo) is a board game first and foremost, many folks are most familiar with the property from the 1985 movie that starred Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn and Christopher Lloyd, among others. While originally met with mixed reception and failing to make back its budget at the box office, Clue has become a cult classic in the decades since, and now the long-awaited remake is finally moving forward with Ryan Reynolds as one the leads. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who've also worked on the Deadpool movies with Reynolds, are still in the process of crafting this new Clue tale, but the duo are already thinking about making the remake more adult than the previous movie. As Wernick put it:
Don't be surprised if Clue is an R-rated... Potentially.
The Clue remake has bounced between different studios and creative talent since it was announced in 2011, but last January, we learned that as part of a three-year first look deal with 20th Century Fox, Ryan Reynolds will produce and star in the Clue remake, and he brought Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick aboard to pen the script. The original Clue was rated PG (though one could argue that there elements that weren't necessarily kid-appropriate), but rather than turn the remake into a family-friendly affair, it sounds like Reese and Wernick intend to head into rated-R territory, though nothing is set in stone yet. If I had to guess, I suspect that the Clue remake will be similar to how was 21 Jump Street was handled, where adult humor will be used to make fun the original property, but it will still have the core elements that make it a proper adaptation.
It will be a while until we learn what the Clue remake will be rated by the MPAA, but as Rhett Reese also mentioned when he and Paul Wernick spoke with MTV, while this new movie will have elements of the original movie, they also don't want this new story to just rehash what came before. Reese explained:
We want to build on it. We want to take some of what makes it fun and funny, but then we want to do our own thing. It's about finding that balance. Hopefully we don't upset the Clue-hounds because there are a lot of them apparently. We didn't realize this until we signed up.
The only other important detail we know about the Clue remake so far is that unlike the original, which was set in a mansion, this version will be a "worldwide mystery" action-adventure that could set up a franchise. But if Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick decided to embark down the R-rated path, this'll be one action-adventure that you might want to take the kiddies to see in theaters.
