Get Out's Jordan Peele Has Really Nice Things To Say About Oscar Winner Guillermo Del Toro

It's always great when talented people can appreciate other talented people, particularly when they're working in the same field. Take Jordan Peele, for example. After years of acting in and writing comedy projects (most notably the Comedy Central series Key & Peele), he made his directorial debut with Get Out, the social commentary-infused horror movie that earned critical acclaim and ended up being one of the most profitable horror movies ever. That ended up putting Peele in competition at the Academy Awards earlier this year with Guillermo del Toro, who helmed The Shape of Water. Del Toro came out the victor, but Peele still holds a tremendous amount of admiration for the man, as evidenced by the nice words he recently wrote. Here's a sampling of the praise Peele directed towards del Toro:

To watch one of Guillermo's masterpieces is an experience in escapism and wonder. To gnaw on the totality of his work reveals an obsession with the eternally forbidden romance between beauty and beast. Guillermo is in love with monsters and lives to show us that we are too. With each fable he weaves, he pushes us closer to acceptance of a primal truth: that we each have a deep connection to the spectrum of otherness.

Time Magazine recently unveiled its Time 100: The Most Influential of 2018 list, and Guillermo del Toro was one of the many individuals being honored. Jordan Peele was selected to write the blurb about del Toro, and in addition to the paragraph above, Peele complimented del Toro for the "potion" that he mixes that's "a pinch of macabre, a dash of melancholy and a few handfuls of stunning horror," along with a healthy serving of whimsy. Peele also said that watching one of del Toro's "masterpieces" is "an experience in escapism and wonder." Del Toro has a gift for creating monsters and weaving together mythology that captures audiences' hearts, and in Peele's opinion, artists "adore" him because he doesn't compromise when telling his stories of love and fear.

Get Out and The Shape of Water were among the most prominent movies at the Oscar ceremony in early March, with The Shape of Water earning 13 nominations and Get Out earning four. In the end, Get Out walked away with the Best Original Screenplay Oscar, while The Shape of Water won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. It will be interesting to see in the coming years if both movies are still appreciated by the masses as they are now, but at least we know that Jordan Peele deeply respects what Guillermo del Toro has accomplished over his more than three decades of filmmaking. Here's hoping these two can collaborate together somehow.

Superhero movies have become the biggest genre in filmmaking over the past few years, in no small part due to the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plenty of studios have gotten in on the action since Iron Man debuted in 2007, and the genre is about to get more complicated since Disney officially acquired Fox. This seemingly put Fox properties like X-Men in jeopardy, although The House of Mouse already made it clear that the Deadpool franchise was here to stay.

Just how Ryan Reynolds' signature mercenary will work under the Disney umbrella is a total mystery, as is his possible inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While fans may be concerned about the Deadpool franchise being held back in the new studio, Kevin Feige is here to quell your fears. He recently spoke about Disney CEO Bob Iger's intentions with Wade Wilson, saying:

When we were purchased, Bob said to us, If its not broke, dont fix it.' Theres no question that Deadpool is working, so why would we change it?

Well, that's a relief. While Deadpool's future with the MCU is still a mystery, cinephiles should rest easy knowing that Ryan Reynolds' franchise won't be given the Disney gloss for future installments. So we should expect plenty of violence, cursing, and fourth-wall-breaking in Deadpool 3 and/or X-Force.

Kevin Feige's comments to Variety should please the many Deadpool fans out there who might be nervous about his adoption by Disney. The franchise became such a massive success because Ryan Reynolds brought something totally unique to the franchise. He references the various cinematic universes, and Wade Wilson is constantly making jokes that aren't family friendly. It's this comedic approach to the genre that has resonated with audiences, as well as casual moviegoers who simply want to enjoy an R-rated comedy.

Deadpool's rating has been the biggest concern about Disney's acquisition of the property, as dumbing down a future installment to PG-13 would lose the spirit of the franchise. But Kevin Feige's recent statement indicates that Bob Iger isn't planning on making any liberal changes to the successful property. Considering what a massive box office and critical success the first two movies were, it stands to reason that he'd let Ryan Reynolds and company continue doing their thing.

While the details regarding the Disney and Fox deal are still coming to light for the public, one thing is clear: Wade Wilson is going to have a field day referencing the events of the merger when he returns to theaters. Deadpool loves referencing the various cinematic universes, and now that his franchise is at the center of two of them colliding, the jokes will write themselves.

The Hardest Part About Creating The 1980s For The Mystery-Thriller Summer Of '84

In this day and age of Stranger Things or Fargo, audiences are trained to believe that it's easy to recreate a past decade, be it the 1970s or '80s, for the benefit of an on-screen story. Period realism is very important to an audiences' enjoyment of a film or television series, and when you set your tale in a decade of recent memory, you have to work really hard to get the details down, or the viewer will tune out before you have had a chance to hook them. But what about when you are an indie mystery thriller, working on a budget? We recently posed this question to Roadkill Superstar, the collective directors of the Sundance film Summer of '84, and learned about the obstacles they encountered when building a believable setting for their original story:

Francois Simard: We had an amazing team, an amazing art director. They did miracles with no money. Because it is a small-budget indie movie. If there was something that was not right, we just cut it from the movie.Yoann-Karl Whissell: It was really important for us. There's a vision of the '80s that it was all neon and pink, and all very bright colors. It was starting to be those colors, but people didn't change their wardrobe because it was suddenly the '80s. Especially in '84, it was more... it was a leftover of what the '70s were. And so it was more brown and orange, and stripes.Anouk Whissell: And since it's very grounded in reality, we really wanted to add the references to be in the background of the story, and to basically just use it to just set the period.

The fact that Summer of '84 takes place in that era is important, but not vital to the telling of the story. The same tale could be shifted to any decade, though there would be some needed tweaks. In Summer of '84, very close teenage friends who are bored stiff on their summer break begin to suspect a neighbor of criminal deeds. There's a serial killer on the loose in their town, and the collective imaginations of the loose-lipped kids have them believing they are on to the trail of a murderer. But are they right? Or barking up the wrong tree?
