While the Skrulls play a vital role in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel, their role in the marketing has not been significant so far. Sure, they've shown up a few times, but there's been only one line of dialogue, and it wasn't until last night that it was even mentioned they shapeshift. We have a clear idea of what's going on with the titular hero, but not much about the villains she is facing down. Fortunately, Ben Mendelsohn delivered everything you need to know about the alien villains from the upcoming blockbuster in a single, perfect quote last year, and we can share it with you now:

I'm Talos. I'm the battle commander of the Skrulls. I take it most of you know who Skrulls are? We kind of rule the shit. Most of the rest of the Marvel comic universe are punks basically. And I guess to quote Snoop Dogg, 'We are the shiznit.' We stand above. I mean, look, we can be anyone, and we're stronger than the rest of them. Basically that's it. Yeah, we're maligned, we're misunderstood. But, you know, we're Skrulls. We're Skrullin. Any other questions?

This epic bit of philosophizing about the Skrulls role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was delivered on set last year as Ben Mendelsohn sat down to talk about the movie with a group of reporters invited to visit the production -- a group of which I was part. The actor was in full makeup for the interview, and while sort of weaving in and out of character he had a blast answering questions, starting with the above perfect response to the basic question "What is your role in the movie?"

If Ben Mendelsohn's quote isn't quite sufficient for you in explaining who the Skrulls are, their story begins in the pages of Marvel Comics from the early 1960s -- where they were introduced as a recurring extraterrestrial foe for the Fantastic Four. Their role in the universe eventually expanded, and they eventually became a problem for many of all of the heroes given their very special skill: they have the ability to transform into anything.

They are introduced in Captain Marvel because while they have a lot of enemies around the universe, their greatest foes are the Kree -- a species of which the lead character is a part at the start of the film. They have been fighting a war for centuries known as the Kree-Skrull War, and it's in the midst of the conflict that Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) will begin to remember some very important parts of her past.

Sadly the actors and filmmakers were very tight-lipped when it came to discussing the relationship between Talos and Captain Marvel, and the plans that the Skrulls have on Earth in the movie. However, producer Jonathan Schwartz did heap praise on the work Ben Mendelsohn does in the film and the fun that comes as a result of his character's ability to transform. Said the filmmaker,Ben kind of plays the face of the Skrulls, the leader of the Skrulls, and that's Talos. Over the course of the movie he'll shapeshift a little bit, so we'll get to see him in human form... I think it's sort of fun to show off both the Skrulls powers and Ben's range as an actor because he's very different in all of those parts. It's been super fun to watch.

Starring Brie Larson, Ben Mendelsohn, Samuel L. Jackson, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law, Captain Marvel is getting closer and closer to its highly anticipated release. The Comic Character The Directors Almost Included in Captain Marvel

From inception to release, Marvel films go through a ton of reworks, leading to some characters originally intended to debut on screen to be cut by the time the movie hits theaters. And Captain Marvel is no exception. In my recent interview with the movies directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, I asked them about this. Heres what Boden said:

We were always kind of obsessed with Helen Cobb and she didnt make it into the movie. I think we thought about her a lot in terms of when we were trying to develop the story.

Interesting! For those unfamiliar with the Captain Marvel character, Helen Cobb is a famous pilot that inspired Carol Danvers to pursue her career in the Air Force and holds the highest-record for flight, which she wishes to break. In one story, Carol travels back in time (in a time-traveling plane, because she cannot time travel on her own), meets her, and joins the Banshee Squadron-- an all-female fighting unit in World War II.

When Helen Cobb dies of old age back in her timeline, Carol is given her airplane. The character exemplifies the importance of female role models, so its no wonder the directors considered her during the development of Captain Marvel. Check out the directors talking about it below:

While Helen Cobb was in the running, she didnt make it past script development, as Kevin Feige recently confirmed with ComicBook.com. Heres what the Marvel chief said about Helen Cobb:

She was in some drafts But ultimately, the story is about Carol Danvers, so everything had to focus and funnel through her.

There are certainly tons of exciting characters found in between the pages of Captain Marvel comics who would have been an exciting addition to the big-screen origin story of Carol Danvers. In the end, the filmmakers had to focus on telling her story first and foremost, which left out room for Helen Cobb.

While Helen Cobb wont be seen in Captain Marvel, she would be a fantastic addition for a potential sequel. It would allow for more of Carols roots and inspirations to be delved and seeing the hero join the Banshee Squadron in WWII sounds badass. This also opens the window for Captain Marvel to run into some other characters in the MCU from the past and fill in some more gaps in the universe that have yet to be explored!

But wait were getting ahead of ourselves. Youll have to first check out Captain Marvel in theaters on March 8. The origin story follows Brie Larson as Carol Danvers as a Starforce officer who falls to Earth in 1995 and teams up with Nick Fury, in his first intergalactic mission and amidst a war between the Kree and Skrull races.

Why Sean Astin Was Nervous About The First Lord Of The Rings Movie

As far as overall scope, there are few film properties quite as grand as Peter Jackson's The Lord of The Rings franchise. Adapted from the beloved J.R.R. Tolkien novels, Jackson's trilogy were cultural events of the 2000's that garnered mass acclaim and box office numbers. And while they're still revered by moviegoers today, there was a time when their success wasn't certain. The Fellowship of The Ring had a massive budget of $93 million, so it had the potential to really tank if it didn't resonate with audiences. Actor Sean Astin played Samwise Gamgee in the trilogy, and recently spoke to the risk attached to Peter Jackson's original film. He said,

I think when you took a look at the costumes and the sets and the swords and you saw the scope of it, I don't think there was ever any doubt that what we're making was spectacular and really special and important. What you didn't know was whether or not it would be a box office success. And, in a very important way, the success of the first film allowed them to go and make huge adjustments to the second and third film like that. So if the first film had come out and not performed, the second and third films would have been totally different movies.

The Lord of The Rings ended up being film royalty, but it had the potential to fail hard given its massive budget. One bad movie was all it would've taken to wreck plans for the rest of the trilogy, and therefore cutting Sean Astin's tenure as Sam. And really, what would LOTR be without all of his knowing looks to Frodo in the sequels?

Sean Astin's comments come from his conversation with io9, reminiscing about his various iconic film and TV roles. Astin's Samwise is a fan favorite character, as he was the heart of the franchise, as well as Frodo's long journey to Mount Doom. We watched him advocate for his friend time and time again, going up against the fiercest of foes in order to destroy The Ring. And while he was charming and sweet in The Fellowship of The Ring, the character's true colors came out more in the following two sequels.

Ultimately Peter Jackson's iconic Lord of The Rings trilogy made oodles of money, grossing a total of $2,917,506,956 during its three movie international run in theaters. There were also countless video games, merchandise, and action figures to further boost overall gross. Eventually it was followed up by The Hobbit trilogy, which brought back actors like Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom for another adventure in Middle Earth.

Sean Astin has been keeping busy in the years following 2003's The Return of the King. He's recently been doing a ton of TV work, with acclaimed runs in both The Strain and Netflix's Stranger Things.
