Why Dakota Johnson Needed Therapy After Filming Suspiria

Previews suggest that there are a ton of great movies set to come out between now and the end of the year, but none look as trippy, eerie, and disturbing as Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria. We won't know until November if it will actually live up to that promise, but certainly one person deeply affected by it is star Dakota Johnson - who recently explained why her experience playing Susie Bannion saw her seek the help of a mental professional after production:

I find sometimes when I work on a project and --- I don't have any shame in this --- I'm a very porous person and I absorb a lot of people's feelings. When you're working sometimes with dark subject matter, it can stay with you, and then to talk to somebody really nice about it afterwards is a really nice way to move on from the project. My therapist is a really nice woman.

Dakota Johnson first revealed that he specifically entered therapy following the making of Suspiria earlier this year, but it was only during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that she explained the full story. It seems that her character work and the tone and themes of the film wound up being a little too intense for her due to her emotional filters, and as a result she felt the need to talk out her feelings with a third party.

This is interesting to learn if not just for the perspective it offers on the craft. There are plenty of actors who have the ability to completely mentally compartmentalize the work, go home at night disconnecting from their role - but others, like Dakota Johnson, aren't able to do that as easily. As a result, it can clearly be affecting for the performer, opening them up to thoughts and realities they might not have otherwise explored. Clearly this happened to Johnson in the making of Suspiria, and I'll admit to it making me extra curious to see what kind of heat the film is packing.

A remake of the Dario Argento classic, Suspiria begins as a young American woman (Dakota Johnson) moves to Berlin to enroll in an exclusive dance academy. She begins to discover, however, that the benefits of the experience may not be enough to compensate for the number of strange and horrific occurrences that begin to happen with greater and greater frequency. The film, which has a stacked cast including Chloe Moretz, Tilda Swinton, and Jessica Harper, just premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it received a polarized response - so we'll just have to wait and see how mass audiences receive it.

Amazon Studios is releasing Suspiria domestically, and is set to give it a limited release on October 26 followed by a nationwide expansion on November 2nd. Zack Snyder Shares An Early Photo Of Batman, Superman And Wonder Woman In Costume Together

The debut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice did something historic for the big screen comic book movie genre. The second DCEU movie introduced Batman and Wonder Woman, and it brought the legendary DC Trinity together in live-action for the very first time. The monumental nature of that union was not lost on director Zack Snyder, and the director recently took to social media to share an image from the costume test that brought the heroes together. Check it out, below.

Truly a moving moment for DC fans. The black and white picture seen above was posted to Zack Snyder's Vero account, and it shows the costume test that brought united Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, and Ben Affleck as Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman, respectively. Though other heroes like The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa) would eventually get fully introduced during the events of Justice League, the introduction of the DC Trinity in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was the film that solidified the moment that the DC universe became a cinematic universe post-Man of Steel.

Of course, this photo leads us to wonder when we may see these characters unite for another adventure. We know that Wonder Woman 2 is currently on the way and set for a November 1, 2019 release date, and that Matt Reeves is currently developing a standalone Batman movie (though it remains unclear if Ben Affleck will return to the cape and cowl as Bruce Wayne for that film). That said, it's not clear when a second Justice League movie will debut in theaters -- a stark contrast from when this picture was taken, as Zack Snyder's original approach to the DCEU involved a five-movie arc that would've included Justice League 2. Now it's just a matter of waiting to see how the folks behind the DCEU will choose to bring the Trinity together for another outing.

Fast-forwarding to the present, Zack Snyder has now mostly left the DCEU behind and moved on to new projects as a director. He's still involved as a producer on some projects like Wonder Woman 2, but his next film should take him away from the superhero genre, as he hopes to adapt Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead into a full-blown feature. That said, given the deluge of DC-related reveals that Snyder has posted to his social accounts in recent days, it seems like he still has quite a bit of passion for the landscape that he created.

When The Black Widow Movie Should Start Filming, According To David Harbour

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a truly fascinating place right now. Avengers: Endgame is just weeks away, and the future of the MCU is largely a mystery. Marvel Studios is keeping its plans close to chest for Phase Four, as releasing the next slate of films has the potential to spoil the events of Endgame. But there are a few developing projects to keep an eye out for, including the long-awaited Black Widow movie.

The Black Widow movie has been slowly coming together, as director Cate Shortland has been assembling her cast and crew. Joining Scarlett Johansson for her first Marvel solo flick is Stranger Things fan favorite David Harbour, who already dipped his toes into the superhero genre with Hellboy. Harbour recently revealed when Widow's movie might begin filming, saying:

I think its slated to start in June. I dont think they have it fully-boarded yet, but its a great character. Im really excited about it. The cast is fleshing out (with) Scarlett and Florence Pugh, I think they said. I know they were talking about Rachel Weisz. Theres some really great actresses.

Well, this is exciting. The casting process may still be under way, but it looks like Black Widow's movie may start production in the near future. June isn't all that far away, so it looks like the solo flick will end up being one of the first releases of Phase Four. As long as nothing goes awry, that is.

David Harbour's comments to Den Of Geek are sure to excite the rabid Marvel fanbase, who are eager to see Scarlet Johansson's signature Marvel character get her time in the sun. While little to no information has been shared regarding the movie's contents, development amping up and possible June filming makes it all seem much more real. And the movie is a long time coming.

Despite being an OG member of The Avengers and one of the biggest characters in the MCU, Black Widow has surprisingly not been given her own solo movie yet. Instead, Natasha Romanoff served as a supporting character in a variety of other projects, including Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But considering how mysterious and complicated the character is, she's still been underused in this capacity.

But that should change with her solo movie, although it's unclear what that project will contain. Black Widow is one of the surviving characters in Avengers: Endgame, but it seems possible that she might perish in the battle against Thanos. If that's the case, perhaps the solo movie will be a prequel, allowing for Widow's dark backstory to finally be fleshed out onscreen.

Black Widow will return to theaters when Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26th, and you can see David Harbour in Hellboy April 12th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
