Mark Hamill Has A Prototype Chewbacca Mask From A New Hope

There's no film franchise quite as epic and far reaching a Star Wars. Starting back with George Lucas' original 1977 classic A New Hope, the galaxy far, far away has continued expanding for decades of filmmaking. As such, there are generations of hardcore fans who are eager to get any glimpse of the epic space opera, and shell out plenty of cash in the process. Some hardcore fans who will spend top dollar for memorabilia, and it turns out that Mark Hamill has a fantastic piece of of the original set: a rejected Chewbacca mask.

Actor Peter Mayhew played Chewbacca in the original and prequel trilogies, before handing over the role to Joonas Suotamo for the most recent additions to the franchise. He recently shared a photo of a young Mark Hamill with a Chewie mask, and Hamill later revealed that he's still got the thing. Check out Mayhew's original post below.

Well, this is awesome. Mark Hamill was 25 years-old when he was cast as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, a role that would make him a household name and give him a special place in countless fans' hearts. The above image shows that young actor, seeing what it's like to have the mask on and become a Wookie. If only he knew how viral the Chewbacca mask would be years later.

After seeing Peter Mayhew's post, Mark Hamill responded on his own Twitter. The Jedi Master put his two cents in, making an awesome revelation in the process. He said:

This pic is significant NOT because I was posing behind my 1-bedroom Malibu bachelor pad in a The Quick t-shirt. It's because that Chewy mask rarity was a rejected prototype George Lucas gave me because he didn't want the finished product to be snarling. (& yes-I still have it)

Is anyone else geeking out right now? Not only did Mark Hamill reveal George Lucas' process about crafting Chewbacca for his first appearance in A New Hope, but Luke Skywalker got to snag the prototype, and has kept it to this day. Hamill has always been on the franchise's biggest cheerleaders, and this type of love and reverence for the property is why the fandom continues to adore him to this day.

It's fascinating to hear how George Lucas methodically brought Chewbacca to life. The Wookie needed to be the right parts cuddly and terrifying, mirroring how the Star Wars franchise mixes adult themes and childlike wonder. Chewie has made a whopping seven appearances across the live-action blockbusters, and will be rounding up to an even eight with J.J. Abrams' Episode IX. The character is absolutely adored, and Lucas was careful to make his appearance perfect. That he did.

Fans will also appreciate seeing a glimpse into the world of the original Star Wars trilogy, before it grew to the epic scale it's at now. Mark Hamill and Peter Mayhew are synonymous with their characters, and Lucasfilm is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Why Ian Malcolm Didnt Play A Bigger Role in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

One of the most exciting things about the lead up to the release of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was the discovery that Jeff Goldblum was going to reprise his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm. Unfortunately, after seeing the movie, many fans were disappointed, as it turned out that the character wasn't actually in the movie very much at all. Producer Colin Trevorrow was recently asked if there was any discussion of bringing the character to the island and giving him a larger part in the story. Apparently, there was never much discussion about making the role any larger, as it was felt that anything the writers did to make Jeff Goldblum's character a bigger part of the story would have been too contrived. According to Trevorrow...

We never did. It always felt really cheap to me. It always felt fake. It felt like a construct of screenwriters trying to figure out how to fit in a character they love. I have so much respect for those characters that I just wouldn't want them doing anything I don't think they'd naturally do.

It may take you longer to read this article than Jeff Goldblum was on screen during Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. He acts as a sort of bookend to the story, appearing in an early scene where he is testifying before Congress on the subject of what to do with the dinosaurs that are in danger on Isla Nublar. He returns at the end speaking before the same committee, and setting up the new world that we will see when Jurassic World 3 arrives in a few years.

While fans may have been frustrated by the lack of Goldblum, because there can never be too much Goldblum, Colin Trevorrow's comments on the Empire Film Podcast are actually good news. If there wasn't a way to make a larger Ian Malcolm appearance not seem solely like a gimmick, then it's best that it didn't happen. The only thing worse than seeing the character return in a glorified cameo would be seeing him return in some ridiculous way that didn't make any sense that was ultimately damaging to what people loved about the character in the first place. Trevorrow makes it clear he loves the character too, and thus he didn't want to see him used badly.

In the end, it's a good thing that these characters from the early part of the franchise are being used properly. B.D. Wong's Dr. Wu made sense to be working in the park in the previous film and his character arc has continued from there. It remains to be seen if other characters will return in Jurassic World 3, but fans can rest easy that, if they do, it should be in a way that makes sense for the story being told.

Shazam! Releases Different Trailer For China That Reveals More Jokes

When comparing the underwhelming performance of Justice League to the commercial smash that is Aquaman, one might think the DCEU might be decidedly distancing themselves from a previously-planned interconnected universe. While the studios upcoming lineup indicates a move in that direction, it looks like Shazam! wont be completely ignoring the other DC heroes. In past trailers, weve seen a few sprinkles here and there referencing the DCEU, such as Freddy Freemans authentic Batman Batarang and when Shazam yelled Get em, Batman! when throwing a big doll of the Caped Crusader. The new trailer for China mixes familiar footage with new and hilarious DCEU jokes, and man, do they get us excited for the upcoming release. Check it out:

Well, arent these are perfect!! The new trailer was released in anticipation for Chinas upcoming release of Shazam! on April 5, which coincides with the domestic opening day as well. While most of the clips arent new, the few that are win big at taking a jab at other superheroes in DCs film universe.

The footage reveals a bit more of Shazams face-off with Dr. Sivana in the city, showcasing more stunning action and a hilarious exchange between them. Amidst their big fight, Dr. Sivana proceeds to threaten the hero, but the superpowered Billy Batson points out, they are a mile apart and he cant hear his "bad guy evil speech." Within the scene, it looks like the movie will cut to a child humming the iconic Superman Theme while playing with Batman and Superman action figures, which mirror the actions of Shazam and Dr. Sivanas fight.

The new China trailer also shows a clip of Shazam looking into a fish bowl and quipping I cant talk to fish, what could we do with that thats cool? Freddy responds with, Maybe command an army of billions in the Ocean! while gesturing to his Aquaman t-shirt. Its a funny poke at the underwater hero often being the butt of jokes, well, before the naysayers saw how badass he can be in the recent blockbuster, that is.

These are some amusing jokes to get fans excited for Shazam! which show the franchise isnt completely abandoning its roots. This is also probably somewhat of a business move for Warner Bros. to market the new hero to Chinese audiences because movies such as Justice League and Aquaman made some good money there more so with Aquaman, which topped Wonder Womans entire box office total of $93 million in just three days in China, before making over $298 million total in the big movie market.

Time will tell where Shazam! stacks up alongside its fellow DCEU heroes at the China box office, but early tracking on the domestic front has the superhero flick making around $45 million during its first weekend. The early positive reactions could certainly help propel Shazam! forward when it comes to theaters on April 5.
