How Marvel And IMAX Plan To Make History On Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War is going to be a huge movie. It's got a massive cast of heroes that bring together 10 years of films. However, that's not the only way the movie is going to be big. It's also going to be a big movie in the physical sense. As it turns out, Avengers: Infinity War is the first Hollywood movie to be shot entirely on IMAX cameras. It's also got an epic promo video. Check it out.

IMAX offers a larger screen and a wider aspect ratio than standard cinemas, allowing for some pretty impressive visuals. As IMAX has become more popular with moviegoers, the use of IMAX cameras has become somewhat common, especially for large spectacle blockbuster movies. Both Christopher Nolan and Michael Bay have filmed sequences from recent movies using IMAX cameras. However, usually, IMAX cameras are only used for a couple of key sequences, and standard cameras are used for the rest, which is then converted into the IMAX format.

With all of Avengers: Infinity War filmed with IMAX cameras, it certainly feels like that will be the format to see it in. While seeing any blockbuster movie on a massive screen is always fun, there's a clear difference in quality between native IMAX material and that which has been converted for use on the screen. It isn't always worth the additional ticket price just to see a movie on a really big screen, but here there will certainly be enough of a reason to check out the IMAX version of the movie. With many fans likely expecting to see Infinity War more than once, maybe (at least) one trip to the IMAX just to check it out will be worthwhile.

I've watched my share of Hollywood movies on IMAX screens and while they're often impressive, much of that is simply due to the massive size of the screen. However, I'm certainly interested to see what Marvel's biggest movie is going to look having been filmed specifically for the format. It will also be interesting to see how the IMAX filming impacts the box office. If more people than usual decide to see the movie in IMAX, then it could result in a significant boost to the box office since IMAX tickets can be considerably more expensive.

If filming entirely in IMAX does result in a big financial benefit for Marvel, it will be interesting to see if other Hollywood productions follow suit. Will we be seeing more movies in IMAX going forward?
