First Look At Michael Myers Coming For Laurie Strode In New Halloween Movie

On October 31, 1978, he came home. Now, forty years after the release of John Carpenter's original Halloween, the terrifying Michael Myers will return to Haddonfield, Illinois for one more showdown with Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode. There's quite a bit of fan anticipation to see what Stronger director David Gordon Green does with the franchise when Blumhouse's Halloween debuts on October 19, and our excitement is only enhanced by a first-look at Michael bursting through a door to get Laurie. Check out the new image, below.

Some things never change, and four decades and a few bullet wounds have not diminished Michael's immense strength. We don't have much context for that image in terms of plot points, but it's clear that Michael is going to get up close and personal with Laurie in the Halloween reboot. The former babysitter tries her best to barricade the door and keep him at bay, but he can punch his hand through the glass to reach her if he has to. That said, as USA Today points out in this image, Laurie has changed quite a bit in the years since he first tried to kill her, and she's more ready than ever.

Of course, this raises questions about how much damage Michael will sustain throughout the movie. One of the more significant fan discussions that have taken place in the months leading up to the release of this new take on Halloween is the question of whether or not Michael will be genuinely immortal in the film. Michael became increasingly durable and unkillable as the franchise moved forward over the years, but with Halloween apparently ignoring every single one of the sequels, we will have to wait and see how much the classic slasher bleeds when he punches through the glass.

One other thing worth noting about this look at the showdown between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers is how much it harkens back to a classic moment from the original movie. Specifically, the image of Michael's hand bursting through a door feels decidedly reminiscent of the sequence from the original in which the masked killer (played by Nick Castle in the first film) punches his way through a door to get to Laurie -- who then, in turn, has to punch her way through a glass window to get out of the house. Audiences will finally get a chance to see that showdown between Laurie and Michael later this year when Blumhouse's Halloween debuts in theaters on October 19. The film's trailer will debut this Friday, so keep an eye out for more updates!

Laurie Strode is a fictional character in the Halloween franchise, portrayed by actresses Jamie Lee Curtis and Scout Taylor-Compton.One of the two main protagonists of the overall series (the other being Dr. Sam Loomis), she appears in seven of the eleven Halloween films, first appearing in John Carpenter's original 1978 film.

Captain Marvel? More like Goose: A Love Story. The latest MCU origin story featured a Flerken named Goose; he was quite the scene-stealer and we all cant stop raving about all the cuteness the character brought to the superhero blockbuster. Goose was portrayed by four cats (Reggie, Archie, Rizzo and Gonzo) who interacted with just about every one of the films stars, some of whom reportedly spooked the cats a bit at first, per their trainer, Ursula Brauner of Boones Animals for Hollywood. In her words:

I think maybe it was probably the Skrull costumes. That was one of our challenges because they look so different from people. Ben Mendelsohn was so amazing getting the cats used to the costume and makeup, though. He showed them how he moved and sounded, and he was just really great getting the cats to like him.

Wouldnt we like to know what goes through the minds of the cats who found themselves working with the green alien race of Captain Marvel? The trainer explained it was a challenge at first, but thanks to the patience of Ben Mendelsohn, who plays Talos, the cat actors warmed up to working with the Skrulls.

In Ursula Brauners interview with Vulture, she continued with a sweet anecdote about how the filmmakers helped make one animal star at ease with him on set, with these words:

I remember being in the quad-jet set in a very tight space, and Ben doesnt look anything like a human being in his costume. Reggie was a little unfurled. [Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck] took the time to say, Lets stop what were doing and get the cat comfortable. We had Reggie sitting on a chair, and Ben was sitting in the chair next to him, and we let Reggie go to him and explore on his own volition, and pretty soon, he realized Ben was just like us, but he just looked different. Its about taking the time to stop. And it shows onscreen.

The cats portraying Goose in Captain Marvel certainly look comfortable on screen, as they just about own every moment theyre in, including some especially memorable ones with Samuel L. Jacksons Nick Fury. The actor has given some mixed signals about his time working with the cats on set, telling us that always a good day when Goose was there and other outlets "I am not a cat person."

Brauner did set the record straight in regards to Jackson, noting he was one of the best people for the cats to work with on the film. She said they loved him and would go right up to the actor. Of the four cats, Reggie was the star cat actor, who probably is in 70% of the scenes seen on screen, according the his trainer.

In the Captain Marvel comic books, Carol Danvers does hang with a Flerken, though his name is famously Chewie. The filmmakers decided to go with Goose instead to match the films roots in the 90s and pay tribute to the fellow Air Force film character.

4 Reasons Why A Quiet Place 2 Is A Good Idea

Warning: mild spoilers for A Quiet Place are in play. If you haven't seen the film, and want to stay unspoiled, bookmark this page for future reading and head on out.

When something like A Quiet Place hits theaters with as much impact as it did this past weekend, sequel talk is inevitable. A sleeper hit striking like lightning, and packing a hell of a punch, is always something that Hollywood wants to cash in on, with sequels being the biggest and most often used method to do so. But is A Quiet Place 2 a good idea? Well, that depends on who you ask, as some aren't as optimistic as I am about a potential sequel's chances.

Bringing back the world of A Quiet Place for, at the very least, one more entry isn't a terrible thing, in my honest opinion. In particular, there are certain aspects to the first film that could really lead to future success, further cementing the first film's place as a modern landmark in horror history. Let's discuss this further.

The Abbott's Story Isn't Over YetAfter introducing us to, and putting us through the wringer with, the Abbott family in A Quiet Place, seeing Emily Blunt's face light up in dark glee as she prepares to take her revenge is the sweetest ending possible. But once the euphoria wears off, we start to wonder what happens next. Are there really just two more monsters? Does she defeat them with the help of Reagan? Even if they do defeat the monsters, what's next? The film may have left us with a fantastic cliffhanger, but when we've come to root for the Abbotts as hard as we did in A Quiet Place, the least they can do is give us A Quiet Place 2 to wrap up their story.

There's Room For Other One-Off Films In This UniverseWhile we do want to see a definitive continuation / wrap-up to the story of the Abbotts, we can also concede that it may not be the best idea for a sequel. That cliffhanger does work, and if this first family of silence is off the table, that's fine and dandy. But given that A Quiet Place sets up both a huge invasion / conflict backstory, as well as a general dynamic of low dialogue / high tension film, both of those routes could yield another inventive entry in the series. Not to mention, there were a handful of farms that were seemingly picked off one by one in A Quiet Place, so seeing how they fared would keep the same brilliant constraints on the Quiet Place universe, without having to touch the Abbotts.

It Could Help Sharpen The Series' ApproachUltimately, if there's going to be a sequel to A Quiet Place, all involved need to think of one question going in: how do they top the original? Much like Cloverfield is a shot in the arm to sci-fi anthology storytelling, A Quiet Place could be a great gateway to another series that explores a similar concept across various settings. Different locations across various countries around the world would lead to more clever spins on the first film's formula. With the basic rules in place, any new setting is a new obstacle course for a potential Quiet Place sequel to race through; and revisiting the concept of the anthology, we could see new families struggling to survive the beasts that are attracted by the merest sound.

Horror Needs A Franchise Like A Quiet PlaceUltimately, the best reason that A Quiet Place 2 is a good idea is the fact that the horror world needs a franchise like this one. Reliant on tension and a well-crafted character narrative, the first film gave horror fans everything they wanted, while also appealing to overall moviegoers that may shy away from the genre's reputation. Landing a successful sequel would only help bring more unique audience members to the horror table, allowing them to possibly dip their toes into the deeper ends of the pool. Every genre has its champions that reach across the board to tout their merits and bring in new fans, and A Quiet Place could be the first horror movie since The Ring that might just do that.
