One Side Of Cable Josh Brolin Is Very Excited To Explore In Future Movies

While Ryan Reynolds is a joke machine in Deadpool 2, constantly riffing and commenting about everything, Josh Brolin's Cable is set up as his total opposite. A soldier from an apocalyptic future, he has a resolute mission to kill the child who grows up to kill his family, and that doesn't leave him a ton of time for playful banter. That being said, Brolin certainly sees the movie as a stepping stone in that direction, as he's very excited to play more with that lighter tone in future films. He recently told me,

You have this personal kind of need, or I do, because [Ryan Reynolds and I] have so much fun together, and we love this kind of irreverence that goes back and forth, and this kind of nemesis feel on social media, or whatever it is. You want to explore it more. Hopefully in X-Force. Once you get to the end of Deadpool 2 you start to see more of that Nick Nolte/Eddie Murphy volley, and I want to explore that more, because I have more fun doing that then just being serious.

I sat down with Josh Brolin earlier this week during the Deadpool 2 junket in New York, and it was in response to my very first question that he revealed his hopes for the future of Cable. I had asked if it was a particular challenge playing such a stoic individual while working opposite Ryan Reynolds' Merc With The Mouth, and he not only told me that it was, but that also that he's hoping it evolves into something different and super fun going forward. It's not exactly a spoiler for the new movie, given the long history between Deadpool and Cable in the pages of Marvel Comics, but sets up exciting ideas for the future.

Referencing the relationship between Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte's characters in the 1980s hit 48 Hrs., Josh Brolin hits on the kind of buddy cop relationship that has long existed between Cable and Deadpool for decades, and it's exciting that he wants to develop more of that. Of course, Cable is certainly the more serious of the two, making Brolin the Nolte to Reynolds' Murphy, but Nolte still has plenty of laugh-out-loud one-liners and moments in the Walter Hill action classic. Furthermore, the precedent goes beyond just that movie, as Danny Glover and Robert DeNiro are both legendary and hilarious in Lethal Weapon and Midnight Run, respectively.

On that note, it should be recognized that Josh Brolin knows that Cable is definitely not the jokester that Deadpool is, and that his characterization in Deadpool 2 is reflective of who the mutant hero is in the comics. The actor followed his comments above with that acknowledgment, referencing an interaction with a person at the film's world premiere the previous night:

Somebody said last night, 'That's the guy, though!' And I know there's a guy who is fanatical about Cable and followed all his trajectories and his histories and all that kind of stuff. And he was like, 'That's who the guy was. So you did justice to who the guy was.' And that's always nice to hear, because you never quite know.

What Unite The Seven Really Means For Aquaman

When Zack Snyder first revealed Jason Momoa as Aquaman a few years ago, the image came with a very cryptic message: "Unite The Seven." At the time there was a great deal of speculation about what it could mean, with many wondering if it could reference the seven core members of the Justice League from the comics, but it turns out that guess was wrong. Instead, it was actually an important clue about the plot of the upcoming Aquaman movie, as I learned on the set of the film last year talking with production designer Bill Brzeski:

This is a complicated story. It's not just like you go to Atlantis, and it's Atlantis... Atlantis fell into the ocean about 5,000 years ago, and it morphed into seven different kingdoms. So, when you go to the movie, you've got Trench people; you've got Brine people; you have Xebellian people; you have the Fisherman Kingdom; you have The Missing Kingdom; and you have the Atlanteans. So, the storyline, if you saw on the internet, it says 'Unite the seven.' Really, what that's about for Orm, who is the king of Atlantis, he's half-brother to Aquaman, is to take control and become an "Ocean Master"... He has to unite the seven kingdoms, so you have to have this quorum to really get things going down there.

I visited the set of Aquaman with a small group of other journalists last summer in Melbourne, Australia, and part of our junket included a tour of the production art room a.k.a. The War Room, and it was there was we had the chance to talk with Bill Brzeski about his work on the film. Diving into the complex world that will be introduced to audiences later this year, the filmmaker painted a picture for us what to expect from Atlantis on the big screen, and while he only named six of the seven kingdoms, he answered an important question we've been asking for a long time.

Comic book fans probably perked up at the mention of Ocean Master at the end there, given that is the supervillain moniker taken on by Orm in the pages of DC Comics. The character will be introduced in live-action for the first time in Aquaman, played by Patrick Wilson, and when we first meet him in the story he will have a very specific mission. While he sits on the throne of Atlantis, it is his goal to unite the seven kingdoms, and will do so by any means necessary -- particularly because of his antagonism towards the human race. Unfortunately for him, the big step is acquiring the King's Trident, and recognizing the potential danger Orm represents to the surface world, Aquaman teams up with Mera (Amber Heard) to stop him.

Will Aquaman be able to successfully stop his brother and potentially unite the seven kingdoms himself? We won't find out until James Wan's Aquaman hits theaters later this year -- specifically on December 21st. Mary Poppins Returns will feature the revival of an iconic Disney movie character. As such, it was always going to have a nostalgic factor for fans, but for John Krasinski, that factor was ramped up to the point where he sobbed uncontrollably while watching the movie. He recently revealed to Ellen DeGeneres on Ellen,

The first time I saw it, they give you a tissue box in the screening room, and I thought, 'Oh, that's very nice. I don't have a cold. And they started screening the movie and 25 minutes into the movie, I stood up and went to the back of the room.

John Krasinksi is married to Emily Blunt, who plays the new version of the popular nanny in Mary Poppins Returns. So, not only did he get to see Mary Poppins' debut early and not only did that debut tap into his earlier memories, but he also was seeing his wife master the role on the big screen. It was a lot to take in. Cue the tears.

According to Krasinksi, things got so bad during the viewing that he humorously went through an entire box of tissues before wildly searching around the room for other objects that could contain his tears and sniffles.

Emily said, 'Do you not like it? I've never seen this happen? I was pushing through all of the muffins and bagels that were in the back looking for napkins. I was like, 'I need anything to stop this crying!' I was crying so much I blew through the tissue box in 20 minutes, had to go to the napkins, and then when I ran out of napkins it was all sweater.

He also told Ellen that beyond the sobbing he kept having emotional moments where he'd murmur between tears things like "Oh it's so beautiful." While this humorous rendition of his viewing experience may not be exactly accurate, the sentiment is there.

In fact, John Krasinski isn't the only person who has cried in relation to Mary Poppins Returns. We previously learned director Rob Marshall totally lost it when Dick Van Dyke was filming his scenes for the movies.

Later on in the interview, the amused actor also joked about Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins performance not being her best, and if you want to catch the whole jokey segment, you can head to EllenTube.

If you've seen any of the trailers, musical moment videos or other footage for Mary Poppins Returns that Disney has sent out to the public, you may have gotten a glimpse of the emotional way the company has brought the new story to life on the big screen. From nods to the original via the cockney accent of Lin-Manuel Miranda's new Jack character and animated sequences and more, the new movie will pay homage to the Disney classic. Seemingly that means it should also bring forth lots of feelings in its viewership.

We'll just have to wait and see exactly how popular Mary Poppins Returns ends up being in theaters. You can catch it with your own eyes starting on December 19, 2018. Just be sure to bring your own tissues. Sadly, they won't be given out with the price of admission.
