Disney's New Streaming Service May Finally Have A Name

Disney has spoken about their forthcoming streaming service a lot, but one thing they've neglected to do is give it a name. We've just been referring to as the Disney Streaming Service whenever it's talked about, but it may actually have a name which Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed. He, at least, is not calling it the Disney Streaming Service. He calls it Disney Play.

While no official announcement has been made regarding what the name of the new service will be, Variety points out that Disney's top guy is referring to the service as Disney Play. He used the term during a recent Disney earnings call, which would seem to indicate that it's either the current name of the system internally or simply a name that Iger himself likes. Of course, if the boss likes the name, there's a decent chance that means the name could end up being the actual name of the service.

Although, without any real indication, it's also possible that Bob Iger is using the name specifically because it isn't what the streaming service will be called. It's a way to refer to the service by a short and clear title without revealing what it will actually be called before it's time to reveal the name. It's certainly easier than calling it the Disney Streaming Service all the time.

Disney Play is a decent name, though it's one that seems a little unoriginal. The Starz cable channel, which Disney has an existing deal with, uses that name for its streaming element and, of course, Google uses that name for its entire online store. I would honestly expect something a bit more original from Disney.

Disney Play is one of the more hotly anticipated new online products in recent memory. Following Disney's major acquisitions in recent years including Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and most recently 21st Century Fox, Disney simply has the largest library of any major studio which potentially makes the new Disney service incredibly attractive to consumers. While it is clear that not all of Disney's major titles will be available on day one, existing deals mean that some Disney products will be licensed elsewhere for an undisclosed period of time, it does seem like eventually, the service will be the only place to find things like the Marvel Cinematic Universe or anything from Star Wars. In addition to the existing material, a number of original movies and TV series are being produced.

Disney has a massive existing fan base it seems like a no-brainer that the majority of them will be jumping into Disney Play pretty much at day one. The service is expected to launch somewhere in the second half of 2019, though an exact date has yet to be revealed.




The official website of the Walt Disney Company unveiled the name, and it has been confirmed that everything is finally coming together. There has been some confusion as to what properties may end up on the streaming service, but it has now been confirmed that Disney is going all out.

Sean Gunn Weighs In On James Gunn's Firing From Marvel And Disney

Marvel fans have been waiting since the James Gunn news was first announced to find out how his brother Sean Gunn feels about the whole thing. Today, the longtime brother, friend and co-star took to social media to update fans on where he's at. What came out was a long and poignant statement about growing up, changing and finding redemption. You can see his quote in its entirety below...

Fans have also been waiting to hear from Michael Rooker. The actor has made numerous movies with Gunn, and many expected him to be first out of the gate with a statement. That hasn't happened, but the official Twitter managed on his behalf did release something earlier today. You can check that out below...

That is basically what we expected to hear. There's no doubt that Michael Rooker and James Gunn have been in contact with each other following the shocking dismissal from Disney and the Guardians of the Galaxy series. But it's also heartwarming to see James' brother take to social media, officially, and defend his brother against what seems to be a complicated firing between a filmmaker and a studio who had worked well together before, for years.

The question still remains -- will Sean Gunn return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe now that his brother no longer is involved. We don't know that the MCU needs Kraglin, the human character played by Sean Gunn. But it definitely needs Rocket Raccoon, and while Bradley Cooper lends his voice to the angry animal, the character's motion capture belongs to Gunn, and I'm not sure he's going to want to keep contributing to a franchise that just fired his brother.

At the moment, Sean Gunn's character, Rocket, survived the Thanos snap, so he's definitely expected to be back for Avengers 4. But he likely filmed all of the footage that Marvel Studios needs for them to complete Avengers 4, so it becomes a bigger question of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. As of right now, that sequel is due in theaters in 2020, but outside of that, there are a lot of questions that need answers about the future of this franchise, so stay tuned.


It goes without saying that I love and support my brother James and I’m quite proud of how kind, generous, and compassionate he is with all the people in his life. Since he was a kid, it was clear he had a desire (maybe destiny) to be an artist, tell stories, find his voice through comics, films, his band. The struggle to find that voice was sometimes clunky, misguided, or downright stupid, and sometimes wonderful, moving, and hilarious. Since devoting his entire life to the Guardians movies and MCU six years ago, I’ve seen him channel that voice into his work and seen him transform from the guy who made up things to shock people. I saw firsthand as he went from worrying about “softening his edge” for a larger audience to realizing that this “edge” wasn’t as useful of a tool as he thought it was. That his gift for storytelling was something better. I saw that he was more open-hearted than the guy who thought he needed to get a rise out of people by making nasty or offensive jokes (or whatever you choose to call them—I don’t think his bluer material was ever his funniest and neither does Mom). And the best part is, this change in my brother was reflected in the change that the Guardians go through. I’ve heard my brother say many times that when Quill rallies the team with “this is our chance to give a shit”—to care—that it’s the pep talk he himself needed to hear. It’s part of what made working on the Guardians movies such a rewarding experience for the cast. We managed to find ourselves involved in a big-budget superhero movie that was, at its core, deeply personal. That’s a gift. And that’s why it’s good. This isn’t new information, by the way. It’s all stuff that James has explained many times in interviews, in more detail and more eloquently. It’s not some new spin. It’s always been part of this story. So I guess my hope is that fans continue to watch and appreciate the Guardians movies, not despite the fact that the filmmaker used to be kind of a jackass, but because of it. They are, after all, movies about discovering your best self. Working on those movies made my brother a better person, and they made me one too. I’ll always be proud of that. Peace.

Johnny Depp's Lawsuit Blames Amber Heard For Losing Pirates Of The Caribbean Role

Disney dropped Johnny Depp from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise four days after Amber Heard's op-ed in The Washington Post, his attorneys allege, and they see the events as connected.

Johnny Depp's lawyers just filed a $50 million defamation suit against Amber Heard, arguing her abuse allegations "were part of an elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity for Ms. Heard and advance her career." Since the op-ed was published on December 18, the lawsuit also suggests it was done to help promote her film Aquaman.

Amber Heard's op-ed was titled I spoke up against sexual violence and faced our cultures wrath. That has to change. According to Johnny Depp's team, per The Blast and People, her allegations that he was abusive were "categorically and demonstrably false" and were refuted by police, neutral witnesses, and 87 (!) surveillance cameras.

As you might imagine, Amber Heard does not see it that way. Her rep said, in a statement:

This frivolous action is just the latest of Johnny Depps repeated efforts to silence Amber Heard. She will not be silenced. Mr. Depps actions prove he is unable to accept the truth of his ongoing abusive behavior. But while he appears hell-bent on achieving self destruction, we will prevail in defeating this groundless lawsuit and ending the continued vile harassment of my client by Mr. Depp and his legal team.

Johnny Depp, now 55, and Amber Heard, 32, met on the set of The Rum Diary in 2011, and started dating fresh off his relationship with Vanessa Paradis. Depp and Heard's marriage was short-lived, only lasting from February 2015 until she filed for divorce in May 2016.

Since then, it's been a he said/she said back and forth with their respective teams. But now we can add the allegation that Amber Heard defamed Johnny Depp to the point that Disney -- very quick to dump anyone perceived as problematic -- reportedly dropped him as Captain Jack Sparrow due to her op-ed.

However, there are some question marks with that.

Disney has never said anything publicly about firing Johnny Depp, and they never said they don't plan to make Pirates of the Caribbean 6 -- with or without him -- even amid talks of a reboot/spinoff.

The studio did, however, market the fifth film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, as the "Final Adventure," before it even came out in 2017. So you could argue there were already plans in place to say goodbye to Johnny Depp and the franchise.

Dead Men Tell No Tales made a lot of money overseas ($622.3M), but it was a relative disappointment at the domestic box office ($172.5M off a $230M production budget, per Box Office Mojo). It was also a disappointment to many fans and most critics. Still, there was talk that Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Rnning was being eyed to direct the sequel, and the stars were reportedly contracted to return for another film.

There were no official announcements about that film last year, but that's not unusual. There was, however, speculation that Disney could save $90 million by writing Johnny Depp out of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. So that has to be added as a potential factor in Depp allegedly being dropped from the franchise.

That said, if Johnny Depp's lawyers are arguing that he was dropped just a few days after Amber Heard's op-ed, then there may be something on the record in terms of a phone call to his reps firing him for a specific reason. That's not quite the same as just putting the franchise on the backburner or thinking they might save money with a cheaper film to reboot the franchise -- which was always based off a theme park ride, not Johnny Depp's now iconic character.

Then again, Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were said to be in talks to write a reboot script in October -- that's two months before Amber Heard's op-ed in question. So Disney was already headed in the reboot direction.

Disney had expressed confidence in the Pirates franchise surviving without Johnny Depp, but that was in reference to the idea of a reboot movie attracting an audience with a new cast. That reboot plan seems to have hit a rough patch since the Deadpool screenwriters are now no longer attached.

So we don't know what's ahead for Pirates of the Caribbean, with or without Johnny Depp. Fans seem to have entrenched themselves on their respective sides in this Depp/Heard fight, even though none of us were actually in the marriage with them. People who were actually in their lives are also taking sides and sharing their perspectives. It's ugly.

But the ugliness hasn't stopped both Amber Heard and Johnny Depp from acting in blockbuster franchises. She had a $1 billion success as Mera in Aquaman, and Depp played the headline character in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald; he's expected to return for the next three movies in the franchise, which is planned for five films culminating in Grindelwald's duel with Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law).
