The Pet Sematary Remake Has Cast John Lithgow In An Important Role

2017 was an impressive year for adaptations of Stephen King stories. Sure The Dark Tower underwhelmed critically and communally and The Mist was canceled after just one season, but those were outweighed by the cinematic versions of IT, Gerald's Game and 1922, as well as the Mr. Mercedes TV series. And the Stephen King adaptation train isn't stopping anytime soon, with one of the upcoming projects being Pet Sematary, which was previously made into a movie back in 1989. We've now learned that John Lithgow is joining the new movie as Jud Crandall, one of the original novel's most important characters.

John Lithgow is the second actor to be added to the Pet Sematary remake, as Jason Clarke was previously cast to play Doctor Louis Creed, the main character who becomes friends with neighbor Jud Crandall. Lithgow inherits the role from The Munsters actor Fred Gwynne, who played Jud in 1989's Pet Sematary. The remake is being directed by Starry Eyes' Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch, with Nightyflyers' Jeff Buhler having written the script. EW also noted in its report that coincidentally, Lithgow recently played Winston Churchill in Netflix's The Crown, and the name of the cat that comes back to life in Pet Sematary is named Church, short for Churchill.

Published in 1983, Pet Sematary follows Doctor Louis Creed moving to the small town of Ludlow with his wife, two children and their cat. After striking up a friendship with Jud Crandall, the old-timer shows Louis and his family the cemetery where the town buries its pets. However, later in the story, following the death of Church the cat, Jud shows Louis an area beyond the pet "sematary": a burial ground used by Native Americans that brings whatever is buried there back to life. Unfortunately, the animals resurrected from this mystic ground remain "a little dead" once they're back up and walking, and when Louis put his son Gage in there after the two-year-old is run over by a truck, needless to say it doesn't go well.

In addition to The Crown, John Lithgow's credits in recent years include The Accountant, Miss Sloane, Beatriz at Dinner, Daddy's Home 2, Pitch Perfect 3 and Season 1 of the TV series Trial & Error. The Pet Sematary remake has languished in development hell for years, but now that it's finally getting off the ground, Lithgow sounds like he'll be a worthy addition to the cast, although it's worth noting that he's ten years younger than Jud Crandall was in the book.

With production set to kick off this summer, Pet Sematary is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 19, 2019. Keep checking in with CinemaBlend for continuing coverage about the movie, and don't forget to look through our 2018 release schedule to find out what else this year has in store theatrically.

Justice Leagues Reshoots Reportedly Changed Cyborgs Story In A Major Way

Justice Leagues Reshoots Reportedly Changed Cyborgs Story In A Major Way

For decades Victor Stone, a.k.a. Cyborg, was best known in the DC Comics mythology as a member of the Teen Titans, but when the New 52 launched in 2011, Cyborg's backstory was reimagined so that he was instead one of the founding Justice Leaguers. He filled that same role in Justice League last year, and along with fully introducing Ray Fisher's Cyborg following his cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the movie also brought back Victor's father, Dr. Silas Stone. Silas survived his encounter with Steppenwolf in Justice League, but apparently before the movie went through reshoots, the plan was for Silas to be killed.

This information comes from Vulture editor Kyle Buchanan, who stated that in an earlier cut of Justice League, Silas Stone was killed halfway through, presumably after he and the S.T.A.R. Labs personnel are kidnapped by Steppenwolf and his Parademon flunkies. At the end of Justice League, Cyborg finds a video of Silas, and his words are used to play over the final montage. But once the Justice League reshoots, which were overseen by Joss Whedon, went into effect, Silas was kept alive and his video message was taken out, with Amy Adams' Lois Lane delivering Justice League's final lines instead (excluding the post-credits scene).

It's no secret to anyone who paid close attention to Justice League's development that there were quite a few shakeups behind the scenes, particularly after director Zack Snyder departed and Joss Whedon, who had already been brought aboard for script rewrites, was tasked with seeing the movie to completion. This led to various story changes, though Silas Stone being kept alive is certainly one of the tamer alterations. Just like in the comics, Silas rebuilt Victor's damaged body after a car crash nearly killed him, only in the DCEU, Victor's robotic body was assembled by one of the three Mother Boxes left on Earth. When Steppenwolf arrived on Earth, Silas and other S.T.A.R. Labs scientists were taken because they'd been in contact with the Mother Box, but Cyborg, Batman, Wonder Woman and Flash managed to get Silas and the other survivors away. By the end of Justice League, Silas and Victor seemed be on better terms, and Silas was shown helping Victor further explore his cybernetic abilities, which included redesigning his body.

Although a Cyborg movie was one of the first DCEU movies to be announced, a lot has changed with the franchise in the years since then, and now it's incredible unlikely that Cyborg will arrive in 2020 as previously announced. If/when Cyborg does get off the ground, Joe Morton is expected to reprise Silas Stone, and the actor has said that the solo movie will focus on the Stone family, the specific circumstances that led to Victor becoming Cyborg and Victor's life as a superhero who can't hide his true nature from the public. Considering that Victor has already lost his mother, it's probably for the best Justice League didn't go through with taking Silas off the table. Now Cyborg can take the next step on his heroic journey with his dad supporting him.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for all the biggest updates concerning the DCEU, Cyborg included. If you're interested in what other projects this franchise has in the works, consult our handy guide.

6 Questions We Have About The Lion King Remake

6 Questions We Have About The Lion King Remake

The Lion King remake has generated a lot of internet discussion as of late, and while there's seemingly a lot of excitement surrounding this project, there are also some unanswered questions. In no particular order, here are some of the questions I'd like answered about the remake, for no other reason than to squash that little voice in the back of my mind that says this movie may not be all I hope it will be.

What Creative Liberties Will The Film Take? The Lion King trailer showed a lot of shot-for-shot recreations of scenes from the animation, but does that mean that will be the case with the whole film? We can assume some things will change, as we've already seen Rafiki breaking branches or some type of root to leave a mark on Simba's head as opposed to using the gourd at the end of his stick.

Small things like that being changed likely won't ruffle many feathers, but bigger changes might. That said, folks may also complain if the remake is front-to-back identical to the original, and question why it was even remade in the first place. Jon Favreau did a pretty solid job in his adaptation of The Jungle Book, however, so one could take solace in the fact that he's had to walk this line before and did pretty well in balancing new and old.

Will The Songs Be Altered Or Changed? The Lion King's soundtrack contains arguably some of the best songs Disney has to offer, with a handful of them highly revered by Disney fans. With Donald Glover and Beyonce set to headline this new version, it would stand to reason that either's musical talents will be tapped to change up how they'll be performed. We also know there will be a new end credits song, but is that all that's changing?

Again, this is territory The Lion King remake will have to tread lightly on. The songs Elton John created for the original rank among the best in Disney movie history, so changing them or excluding them completely is a risky move. Those who think otherwise might want to check out comment sections on articles when there was talk that one of the lesser songs, "Be Prepared," wouldn't find its way into the film.

Will Characters' Roles Change?Everyone has a part to play in The Lion King, although some characters have a larger part to play than others. For example, Zazu is someone seen primarily in the film's start, but isn't much of a factor midway through the film. With the hilarious John Oliver voicing the new Zazu, it would be a joy to have his character have a bit more meat to his role than the character originally received.

It's also possible The Lion King could do something like give Nala more to do in the film than find Simba years later. With women empowerment a recurring theme in modern cinema, Nala could be given more to do simply to give a young female audience another character to look up to. Nothing about the production so far has revealed something like that will happen, but obviously it's a question some may have as the premiere date draws ever closer.

How Will Death Be Handled?A lot of The Lion King revolves around one key death, that being the demise of Simba's father Mufasa. In the animated original version, Simba attempted to wake a lifeless Mufasa after a big fall, to no avail. The scene is tough to watch, as the young lion cub slowly realizes his father is not going to "wake up."

Now, imagine that scene happening with the realistic CGI effects we've seen thus far. I'm not expecting Jon Favreau to go full Tarantino on showing Mufasa get eviscerated by wildebeest hooves, but recreating that scene the same way with realistic-looking lions would be rather intense to watch. It's the kind of thing that might traumatize and scar fragile minds, which may mean the film might find a better way of driving home Mufasa's death without showing his lifeless corpse.

Will The Realistic Look Impact Other Scenes?Jon Favreau's remake of The Jungle Book did keep some cartoony elements of the characters from the original, but usually, the characters moved closer to that of actual animals. Doing this in The Lion King would make some classic scenes problematic, especially those where the most realistic outcome doesn't play out. For example, practically none of "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" would look the same with realistic animal movements.

If that's the case, it may kill some of the fun behind The Lion King. Seeing a bunch of animals stacked on top of each other in a highly unrealistic scenario that looks real sounds incredible, so I'm hoping the remake doesn't rob us of that. Of course, there's more than one way to skin a cat, so there's probably other ways to tell this story that doesn't include the animals behaving the same way they do in the original.

Will There Be Nazi References? If "Be Prepared" has been removed from The Lion King remake, it may be because the scene surrounding it was inspired by a popular Nazi propaganda film Triumph of the Will. Scar's minion hyenas are seen goose-stepping in sync with the song, and Scar's watching from a podium resembles that of Hitler looking down on his army.

Obviously, this wasn't done as some subtle wink to Nazi sympathizers of the world, but to show Scar was up to something truly malicious in creating his coup. Still, with Nazi groups getting some play in headlines in recent years, it may be something Disney is looking to exclude from its remake. After all, Scar literally intimidates some hyenas to their death in cracks of lava, so there's other ways to prove he's a bad dude without the Hitler imagery.

The Lion King comes roaring into theaters on July 19, 2019. Those eager for the release can stick with CinemaBlend for updates in the meantime, and read up on things like how Rafiki's character looks different in the teaser when compared to his cartoon counterpart.
