Netflix's Wine Country Trailer Reunites SNL's Funniest Ladies For Day Drinking

Netflix's Wine Country Trailer Reunites SNL's Funniest Ladies For Day Drinking

Whenever you get together with a group of friends for a day of drinking, there are bound to be some laughs. In Netflixs new original movie Wine Country, those friends just happen to be played by some of the funniest women in showbiz, so the laughs are going to flow even more freely than the alcohol. The trailer for Wine Country reunites Saturday Night Lives funniest ladies for some day drinking in Amy Poehlers directorial debut. Take a look:

With a cast like this, you would expect to find a lot of laughs in Wine Country, and fortunately this first trailer provides just that. The basic premise of a group of old friends coming together to celebrate one of their own turning 50 by planning a trip to Napa is ripe with comedic possibility. We quickly see that you dont have to be in your 20s to be a sloppy and entertaining drunk.

In addition to the physical comedy, which actresses like Maya Rudolph do so well, on display in this trailer, it also has some really funny lines. The bit about the lavender popping corn is great and really highlights some of the absurdity and pretentiousness that you might find at a fancy restaurant. With a script from SNL writer Emily Spivey and The Last Man on Earth writer Liz Cackowski, there should be plenty of smart comedy in this movie.

It was also a fun wink (intentional or not) to Parks and Recreation fans to see Amy Poehlers character in this film, Abby, handing out itineraries for the wine country trip. They were just folders, but you cant help but think of Amy Poehlers Leslie Knope, who was a huge fan of planning everything out and micro-managing with massive binders full of information.

While there will clearly be plenty of great humor from this cast, it is evident from this trailer that Wine Country will also have plenty of heart. The drunken falling down, wine-fueled shenanigans and debauchery is only the surface level stuff, and as Tina Feys blunt Tammy warns, the alcohol will let out plenty of truthful confessions and that will put a strain on their friendships.

The characters in Wine Country are enjoying a vacation, but they are also dealing with some of the real issues people encounter as they get older and discover how old friendships are both difficult to maintain, but also hugely important. Those emotional beats should help give Wine Country something heartfelt to say in addition to the good laughs.

Amy Poehler has assembled many of her old friends and put together a positively stacked cast of actresses for Wine Country. Joining SNL actresses Ana Gasteyer, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler onscreen are two SNL writers that have helped make everyone so funny over the years, Paula Pell and Emily Spivey. Naturally these two writers have some of the trailers funniest lines. Plus, former SNL writer and cast member Tina Fey is briefly in the trailer, but looks to have a fun role.

Wine Country arrives on Netflix and in select theaters (Netflix may soon have its own!) on May 10. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule to see all the biggest movies headed to theaters this year, and for all the joys of day drinking with none of the consequences, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

Rogue One Co-Creator Is Working To Reboot The Last Starfighter

Rogue One Co-Creator Is Working To Reboot The Last Starfighter

When The Last Starfighter was released in 1984, it disappointed at the box office, but thanks to the home video market, it slowly became a sci-fi cult classic. In the decades since, there's been speculation about if The Last Starfighter could get a sequel or even be rebooted, but Jonathan Beteul, who wrote the original movie's screenplay, said a few years back that there were issues surrounding the rights to the property preventing that from happening. However, now it appears that those complications are no longer an issue, as Rogue One writer Gary Whitta is working with Beteul on getting a Last Starfighter reboot off the ground. He revealed as such when he posted four pieces on concept art on his Twitter page, which you can see below.

These ship illustrations from Matt Allsopp certainly look cool, but they don't exactly clarify what the plan is for bringing The Last Starfighter back. Fortunately, Gary Whitta spoke with io9 and described what he's working on as a "combination of a reboot and sequel" that "honors the legacy of the original film while passing the torch to a new generation." Going off that description, I suspect that this new Last Starfighter movie would be in the vein of Jurassic World, where it takes place in the same universe as the original, but follow a new cast of characters. Whitta also said that there are still some remaining business issues to work out, but he and Jonathan Beteul are working hard to make this new movie a reality. Whitta explained:

It's a passion project for Jon and me both. And I know we have a great movie here. But we still need to deal with some remaining biz stuff before we can really move forward. We've had a lot of talks with Universal. We're determined, one way or another, to make this happen. Trying to create in Hollywood is always like pushing a boulder uphill, particularly when there are archaic rights issues involved, but we're going to keep trying. That's the lesson of Starfighter... when you get your chance you've got to grab it with both hands, and hold on tight.

For those unfamiliar with The Last Starfighter, the story centered on Alex Rogan, a teenager who was skilled at playing the Starfighter arcade game, where the player has to defend The Frontier from the invading Ko-Dan Armada, led by Xur. Upon hitting the highest score on Starfighter, Alex learns from the game's creator, Centauri, that the game was a test, and with Alex being the undisputed best player, he's taken out into space and must use his skills to pilot an actual ship (called the Gunstar) to help the Rylan Star League fight the Ko-Dan Empire. It's been nearly 35 years since that movie came out, but we've seen many times in recent years that Hollywood has no trouble churning out sequels/reboots to movies that came out decades ago. So for all the Last Starfighter fans out there, it sounds like you're closer than ever to seeing this property finally revisited on the big screen.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on how this new Last Starfighter project is coming along. For now, head to our 2018 release schedule so you can plan your trips to the movie theater later this year accordingly.

When Marvel Might Start Working On X-Men Movies, According To Kevin Feige

When Marvel Might Start Working On X-Men Movies, According To Kevin Feige

If you're a Marvel Comics fan, then the biggest result of Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox's entertainment holdings is that the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties will finally be able to be absorbed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But just because this deal has been in the works for over a year now doesn't mean that Marvel Studios had the go-ahead to start developing new X-Men movies right off the bat. So when can such work finally begin? According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, it could start by next summer. In Feige's words:

We've been told it's looking very, very good and could happen in the first six months of next year. The notion of the characters coming back is great. It's nice when a company that created all these characters can have access to all those characters. It's unusual not to. But in terms of actually thinking about it and actually planning things, we haven't started that yet.

The Disney/Fox deal wasn't quite a certainty in the first half of 2018, but now it's expected to be finalized by the end of January. Once that happens, a new era of X-Men film can begin, and as Kevin Feige mentioned during his appearance on Variety's Playback Podcast, if all goes according to plan, he and the other MCU creative minds will finally get to play with these characters by next summer at the latest. From there, it's only a matter of time before this ever-expanding universe is populated by mutants.

In the meantime, there are still a few X-Men movies left to close out the Fox era. Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants are scheduled for release on June 7 and August 2, 2019, respectively, and X-Force and Gambit are also still in development. It remains to be seen if those latter two projects will ever actually be made, but since Fox is joining the Disney family soon, we can reasonably assume that the Mouse House doesn't want to interfere with Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants' performances, hence why development on any reboots won't happen right at the beginning of next year.

To be fair, even if you take the X-Men and Fantastic Four off the table, Marvel Studios also has plenty to keep busy with in 2020 and beyond. Black Widow, The Eternals, Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Shang-Chi are all in development, and those are just the ones that have been announced to the public. You can bet they have a few other high-profile projects cooking in secret.

Keeping all that in mind, even if Marvel starts working on X-Men and Fantastic Four reboots as soon as possible, it will be several years until the final products are screened, i.e. 2022 or 2023 at the earliest. This is a slow process, but if it means that faithful adaptations of these heroes and villains can finally interact with the existing MCU lineup similarly to how they do in the comics, then by all means, take as much time as needed.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for all the biggest updates concerning the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which will pick back up on March 8, 2019 with the release of Captain Marvel.

That Time The Nun Director Saw Ghosts On His Film Set

Do you want to know one sure-fire way to make your horror movie 100% scarier? Have actual ghosts visit your film set. If this practice actually works, then Corin Hardy's The Nun will be bone-chillingly terrifying, as the director spins an unnerving story of an encounter he had with two spirits while trying to secure a complicated shot in a creepy Romanian castle. Really, it's better to let Hardy tell this story. He relays it really well:

Did that send chills down your spine? We listened to Corin Hardy tell this story during New Line's ScareDiego horror film-fest event, which has become an annual tradition for horror lovers on Wednesday night as the kickoff of Comic-Con. So when The Nun director swung by CinemaBlend's interview suite in San Diego, we asked him to rekindle some of our worst nightmares by relaying it one more time. He added a few juicy details. It doesn't disappoint.

This is why we are holding out hope that The Nun won't disappoint, either. And the footage that we saw from the movie at ScareDiego goes a long way toward setting up another satisfying chapter in the growing Conjuring Shared Universe. The character of the Nun was recently showcased in James Wan's The Conjuring 2, and Wan receives screenwriting credits on Corin Hardy's feature film (alongside Gary Dauberman, who is directing the next Annabelle movie). And Hardy tells CinemaBlend that The Nun will explore some of the valuable backstory of the malevolent force that threatens a novitiate (Taissa Farmiga) and a seasoned priest (Demian Bichir) when they investigate a nun who takes her own life.

As fun as Corin Hardy's story was, the sight of him holding a small doll of his terrifying nun while also wearing a mock Infinity Gauntlet basically wins the day at the CinemaBlend video suite:

The Conjuring universe continues to grow with new horror tales like The Nun, which looks to take full advantage of the fact that it's set in the 1950s, and shot in Romanian castles and fortresses. The footage that we were able to see at the ScareDiego event had a mood and an atmosphere that was different from anything established in either James Wan's Conjuring films, or the two Annabelle stories. And Corin Hardy suggested that The Nun could inspire a traditional sequel, or it could lead to a spinoff for a potentially interesting character that people will meet in this movie... much the same way that audiences were introduced to the Nun in a Conjuring film, giving her a new platform of her own to terrify.

The Nun opens in theaters on September 7.
