Why The Original Halloween Continuity Didnt Make Sense, According To Jamie Lee Curtis

One of the most talked about elements of the new Halloween film from director David Gordon Green is its treatment of the franchise continuity. Rather than trying to build on the six Michael Myers stories told since the 1977 original, the choice was made to bin all those details and proceed with a direct sequel. It's a bit of a controversial choice among die-hard fans, but Jamie Lee Curtis recently explained why it was totally necessary.

We wouldn't have been able to make a 40-year sequel when you've given the sequel-ing to random people for the last 40 years - because there is no bible. There is no Halloween bible that those however many sequel filmmakers followed. Each one came up with their own wacky idea for the next movie. And so there was no continuity. It was scattershot, if anything, and didn't make any sense!

In the pre-Rob Zombie era of Halloween movies, Rick Rosenthal was the only director to make two of the sequels (Halloween II and Halloween: Resurrection), but the rest, as Jamie Lee Curtis points out, all had different writing and directing teams involved. As a result, the continuity was really all over the place - and Curtis had a front row seat. After all, she starred in three of them.

I had the immense pleasure of hopping on the phone with Jamie Lee Curtis last month to talk about her work in the new Halloween, but part of our talked dipped into her history with the franchise. While discussing the previous movies, including the ones she was involved in, she was quite blunt in recognizing their narrative shortcomings, but also made it clear that she understands there is still a lot of love out there for them:

There may be people who love any one of the numbers of Halloween at any time, and they the beauty of streaming is that they can watch any of them. Rinse and repeat; they can watch it over and over and over again. The clever choice [with this new film] was to omit any other movie except Halloween. But that was the clever choice here, because you can't tell a story of generational trauma except to go back to the original trauma.

And that it does. Based on a script by David Gordon Green and Danny McBride, Halloween is set 40 years after the events of John Carpenter's original film, and finds Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode still trying to recover. She has spent decades just waiting for Michael Myers to break out and return, the 1978 experience ever haunting her and affecting all of her relationships, and she finally sees him again on Halloween night.

It can be said without hesitation that the new Halloween is the best Halloween sequel we've seen -- but if you think the treatment of the continuity is changing, think again. I followed up with Jamie Lee Curtis if there is a bible now currently being established, and she practically laughed at the question:

No! No. I don't think there is a bible in... you know, once in a while in a TV show you hear, and by the way, I've never worked on one of them, that you hear that the creator of the show really wrote a bible that said this is going to happen year one, this will happen to year two. This'll happen year three, and they stuck to it. I don't think anything is built that way. No, there is no bible.

The Most Expensive Chinese Movie Ever Made Flopped So Hard It Was Pulled After 2 Days

A lot has been made in recent years about just how important China's movie business is becoming. However, growth like that is bound to come with its own growing pains. In this case, China has apparently found itself with its first big-budget box office flop. A film called Asura, which is reported to be the most expensive movie in Chinese history had such a bad opening that it's already been pulled from theaters.

Asura is a Chinese fantasy epic that is reported to have cost $110 million to produce. Unfortunately, the movie only succeeded in bringing in a minuscule $7.1 million in ticket sales over its opening weekend. This led the producers to take the drastic measure of pulling the movie from theaters on Sunday evening.

Asura is based on ancient Tibetan mythology and was expected to be the first in a fantasy franchise, something akin to China's Lord of the Rings, but certainly, that entire plan is on hold at best, and more than likely completely scrapped.

While China is a nation that, on more than one occasion, has lifted western films that looked like bombs and helped their global box office recover, it turns out China can make movies that bomb just as hard. It's probably something of a filmmaking rite of passage to make a really expensive movie that nobody wants to see. Some of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers have done it on one occasion or another. It's certainly no indication of the film's actual quality or the state of the Chinese film industry.

The exact reason that Asura has performed so poorly isn't clear. According to The Hollywood Reporter, producers believe there has been a coordinated campaign to tank the film's reviews. China has online sites similar to Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic, and just as there have been times when it appears that internet trolls have attempted to artificially drop review averages here, it seems the same thing can happen in China. Regardless of the state of review scores, it appears the film just didn't have the necessary audience interest going into its release.

It also had significant competition from a pair of Chinese films. Dying to Survive had been released the previous week and was already a solid hit that drew significantly in its second weekend. Hidden Man is the new movie both directed by and starring Jiang Wen, known to western audiences as Baze Malbus from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was much more highly anticipated by audiences.

It seems that even in a country the size of China you can't always get enough people interested in your movie to make it a success. It's a lesson we know well on this side of the ocean.

How John Boyegas Pacific Rim Uprising Performance Was Influenced By Idris Elba

John Boyega stars as an entirely new character in Steven DeKnight's upcoming Pacific Rim Uprising -- but one very important element of the part is how he connects to one of the heroes in the first film. If you couldn't tell from the last name, Jake Pentecost is the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost, the leader of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps in the 2013 blockbuster. And while the new movie picks up 10 years after the events of the last movie, in which Stacker died, Boyega recently told me how the performance was used as a reference point:

Jake is obviously significantly different because of the way he was written, and the stuff that he's gone through. I think we all are, to a certain extent, basically shaped by our experiences. Jake's experiences have been kind of rough, and it's taught him this independence that's kind of selfish. So to embody that, but also have transitioned to someone who is like his dad. I wanted him to feel like, 'You're your daddy's boy! That is your dad.' I wanted that to come out as well, so Idris Elba's performance was very, very important.

Pacific Rim Uprising does some notable things very differently than the original, but it does have its tie-backs -- one specifically being the impact that Stacker Pentecost had on his adult son. I had the chance to sit down with John Boyega at the new movie's Los Angeles press day earlier this month, and one thing we had the chance to discuss was the influence of Idris Elba's performance in the last movie. I asked the young actor about looking back at the first film and studying Elba's performance for his own, and he explained how he decided to go about it.

As noted by John Boyega, when we first meet Jake Pentecost in Pacific Rim Uprising, he really couldn't be more different than his father. Confident that the breach that was spewing giant monsters into our world has been closed permanently, he has dedicated himself to a life of luxury -- living in abandoned houses on the coast, scrapping and stealing anything he needs, and generally not caring about anything in the world. That all changes when he is brought back into the fold of the PPDC following a run-in with the law, and is put in charge of training new recruits. It is here where Jake really begins to find himself, and also, in Boyega's words, become his "daddy's boy."
