Could Shazam Join The Justice League In The DCEU? Heres What The Producer Says

As was made perfectly clear yesterday with our first look at Asher Angel's Billy Batson, Shazam! takes place within the DC Extended Universe. Billy may be gaining superpowers soon, but that world is already familiar with the exploits of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and other crimefighters. From what we've learned so far about Shazam!, it will be a self-contained feature, and there hasn't been any word on if any Justice League heroes will cameo in the World's Mightiest Mortal's cinematic debut. That being said, Shazam is being primed to be an important player in the DCEU, and Shazam! producer Peter Safran has acknowledged that there's a good chance that the hero could appear alongside the other Justice Leaguers in future movies. When asked if Shazam could show up in a Justice League sequel, Safran responded:

I wouldn't be surprised to see Shazam play a role in the DCU. He exists in that world.

The Justice League movie may have underwhelmed critically and commercially in theaters, but the team itself is sticking around in the DCEU, and just like in the comics, its membership will almost certainly expand (which was acknowledged when Diana noted to Bruce that there would be "room for more" at the meeting table). Shazam, previously known as Captain Marvel, has worked alongside the Justice League numerous times since he and his supporting cast were added to the DC Comics universe. This includes him being a member of the Justice League International in the 1980s and joining the main Justice League team during Geoff Johns' New 52 run. So while nothing is set in stone yet, Peter Safran's comments to EW indicate that Shazam might get to team up with other DCEU heavy hitter at some point. I'd be especially glad to see Shazam fighting alongside Superman.

If Justice League 2 gets off the ground, maybe Shazam could be one of the new recruits. The prospect of this excited Zachary Levi, who's playing Shazam on the big screen. When Levi was heading to his final auditions for the role last year, he passed by some Justice League billboards and started wondering about the possibility. As Levi put it:

I would lose my shit if that happened, I would lose all of the shits. I remember thinking, 'If I get this and if this movie does well enough and if Justice League does well enough and they make another Justice League ... maybe I'll be on that next poster with all those guys.'

For now, though, it looks like Billy Batson will embark on his superhero journey without any Justice Leaguers to assist him. After meeting the mysterious Wizard, Billy is able to transform into a mighty superhero by saying the word, "Shazam!", giving him powers like super strength, flight and conjuring lightning. But the lad won't have long to get the hang of these abilities, as he'll soon have to use them to fight the forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.

New Deadpool 2 Concept Art Shows How Cable's Arm Could Have Looked

Josh Brolin brought Marvel's Cable to life in Deadpool 2 and while he looked amazing, some brand new concept art reveals how the character could have looked. Jerad S.Marantz was a concept artist on Deadpool 2 and he's recently been filing Instagram with some of the pre-production work that he did, including a different design for Cable's iconic metal arm. Check it out.

Jarad Marantz talks about how this arm was originally designed, based on the idea that Cable had embedded this prosthetic underneath the tech from the techno-organic virus that the character suffers from. The fact that Cable is part machine and part man is due to this virus, and it would have cost him the use of his arm without the use of this prosthetic. Whether or not that's technically what's happening with Cable's arm in Deadpool 2 is never specifically stated, but it's a pretty cool idea that we can assume is the case unless we hear otherwise in the future.

We get multiple angles of the metal arm here, and it looks pretty cool. A lot of fine detail that makes him look like he's part Terminator, which, he sort of is. The final design that we got in Deadpool 2 isn't all that different, with what at least appear to be a few cosmetic differences. Since Jarad Marantz says that these ideas were worked on with the costume designer, and one assumes the folks in charge of the film's digital effects, the changes were likely due to finding something that was easy to create that worked for everybody involved. Here's a partial shot of the final version.

It's always interesting to see the evolution of different ideas as they eventually culminate in what ends up on screen. Things like costume design, or in this case, arm design, are meant to tell you a lot about a character without having to spend screen time explaining things. In this case, there might be details about a character in this design that aren't ever important, but in the era of massive franchise filmmaking, these sorts of things need to be dealt with at the beginning so that, if and when, issues like the techno-organic virus become important later on, the work was done at the beginning and nobody needs to retcon anything.

We know we will be seeing Cable again, as there is an X-Force movie planned for sometime in the not too distant future. Perhaps we'll learn more about the ways Cable has modified himself to deal with his affliction at that time.

This Rotten Week: Predicting Captain Marvel Reviews

Weve only got one wide-release movie in the lineup this week, but its a huge one. The much-anticipated new MCU entry Captain Marvel hits the big screen, and several of us here at CinemaBlend couldnt be more pumped for some intergalactic hero worship.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. It's also worth pointing out up top that This Rotten Week isn't affected by the recent changes made at Rotten Tomatoes, which reportedly weren't made in connection with Captain Marvel. (Those changes include eliminating the Want To See scores prior to release, as well as not allowing comments to be made about a movie prior to its release.) Now let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

We are perhaps reaching critical mass in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Avengers: Endgame now less than two months away, if critical mass is even possible. But before that goes down, moviegoers need to step into the past to get caught up on that mysterious (but not really) call that Nick Fury put out on that dated pager at the very end of Infinity War.

Captain Marvel goes back two decades to introduce audiences to Carol Danvers, one of the many iterations of the superheroine in Marvel Comics canon. Played by Brie Larson, this film offers up another origin story spanning time and space that will help set her character in the right position for Endgame.

Though no Captain Marvel reviews are officially posted yet, which isn't out of the ordinary for a big MCU flick, early reactions do seem almost overwhelmingly positive. It looks like a fun movie, the kind that Marvel has become known for in the singled-out hero movies that fill out the larger universe. With the bar already set so high across the rest of the franchise, it looks like this one can and will live up to the hype, with directors and co-writers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck at the helm.

Recapping last week:I went one for two last week with my predictions, having both movies fall within ten percent of the guesses. Tyler Perrys A Madea Family Funeral (Predicted: 20% Actual: 29%) was an easy one, considering the critical track record of director Tyler Perry

Tyler Perry just doesnt make films that appeal to critics, despite the fact that audiences turn out in droves. In this case, just taking the average of his previous directorial works was more than enough to make a solid prediction. The tone of the reviews was just more of the same for what looks to be the final chapter in the successful Madea franchise. On to more critically laudable things for Perry? Well see.

Greta (Predicted: 65% Actual: 57%) is another win for the two female leads (Chloe Grace Moretz and Isabelle Huppert), according to critics, as they carry this story about an obviously psycho older lady who befriends and then stalks an innocent millennial. I had a bit of a review-driven head start with my prediction, and suspected the score would drop over the course of the week. It did just that and more, and I was actually lucky to have it stay within range.

Next time around, weve got a big one with the novel adaptation Five Feet Apart and the animated feature Wonder Park. Its gonna be a Rotten Week!
