Josh Brolin Is Really Glad He Didn't Get To Play Batman

DC and Warner Bros didn't wait long to recast Batman once Christian Bale's tenure as the hero wrapped up in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises. Following the release of 2013's Man of Steel, it was announced that what we now know as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was in the works, and eventually Ben Affleck was tapped to play the DC Extended Universe's Caped Crusader. But before Affleck donned the cape and cowl, one of the other actors who was eyed to play Batman was Josh Brolin, and nearly five full years later, Brolin is glad he didn't end up getting the role. In Brolin's words:

We indirectly talked about it, but we never got to the point because I wasn't the guy for him. I'm really glad it didn't happen. I haven't thought twice about it.

Ben Affleck was officially cast as Batman in August of 2013, and a month later, Josh Brolin confirmed that he had been in the running to play Batman, but in the end, director Zack Snyder decided to look elsewhere. But if you thought that Brolin might have been disappointed that he never got to play Gotham City's protector, his comments to Empire reaffirm that isn't the case. A year before Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hit theaters, Brolin mentioned that he didn't have any hard feelings towards Ben Affleck for being cast as Batman, and that hasn't changed. Considering how much Affleck has gone through since accepting the Batman mantle, I don't blame Brolin for feeling this way.

While you'll simply imagine what a Josh Brolin-portrayed Batman would look like, as far as the superhero movie genre goes, Brolin is leaving his mark on two fronts (we'd rather pretend that Jonah Hex never happened). In 2014, Brolin took over as Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy, and after cameoing in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he's finally making his full debut as the Mad Titan next week in Avengers: Infinity War. But in addition to playing the MCU's Infinity Stone-obsessed antagonist, Josh Brolin is also bringing Cable to life in Deadpool 2. Brolin is hardly the first actor to play two different comic book characters, but the fact he's playing them around the same time is notable. Batman may be more popular overall than Thanos and Cable, but at least Brolin can lay claim to those characters exclusively on the big screen... well, until the day they're rebooted.

You can see Josh Brolin reprising Thanos when Avengers: Infinity War drops on April 27, and then on May 18, he'll finally debut as Cable in Deadpool 2. There are fewer more potent combinations guaranteed to induce waterworks than when young love is mixed with life-threatening illnesses. If thats what you need to let the tears flow freely, its been a while since A Walk to Remember or The Fault in Our Stars and your reservoir is probably backed up. Fear not, Five Feet Apart has you covered because the trailer for the romance looks like a real tearjerker. Check it out:

So, these two are totally doomed right? This trailer is playing on your emotions hard, showing the desperate situation Stella and Will are in with their cystic fibrosis and the restrictions of their disease. But it also features the sparks flying between them would make them want to risk their very lives just to be closer to one another.

Judging by the trailer, the chemistry between the two leads is palpable, Riverdale's Cole Sprouse as the defeatist rulebreaker and The Edge of Seventeen's Haley Lu Richardson as the eternal optimist, determined to do everything right and trying to help others along the way. This chemistry is crucial to audiences investing in their romance, and connecting with Five Feet Apart in the way that they did for something like The Fault in Our Stars-- which was hugely successful.

As the trailer goes on we see that Stella pulls Will out of his malaise and gives him a reason to fight and to live, while he causes her to bend her own rules in a desire to gain some agency in her life. It looks like an incredibly sweet and uplifting story that will probably see audiences shed a few happy tears before what I imagine will be a tragic ending.

Five Feet Apart is the narrative feature debut for director Justin Baldoni who is also an actor on Jane the Virgin. The film is written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis. That writing duo has another film hitting theaters this year, one from the opposite end of the genre spectrum, the terrifying looking horror film The Curse of La Llorona.

Unlike The Fault in Our Stars, which was based on John Greens book, Five Feet Apart was developed simultaneously as a YA novel according to Publishers Weekly. Rachael Lippincott adapted Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis screenplay into the novel, which landed on the New York Times bestseller list. So if you want to prepare your tear ducts by reading the book first, it is available.

Five Feet Apart arrives in theaters on March 15. I dont imagine tissues are included with the price of admission so plan accordingly. JJ Abrams Reportedly Trying To Fix Star Wars Issues Through Episode IX

Since Disney purchased the rights to George Lucas' Star Wars franchise, there's been a ton of new and exciting content brought to the masses. This includes both main installments and standalone films, which help to expand the galaxy far, far away. And while the House of Mouse has made a ton of money with the franchise and already recouped the $4.05 billion investment made to acquire Lucasfilm, there have been some missteps as of late.

The last two Star Wars released were Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi, which continued the main narrative of the Skywalker Saga and Solo: A Star Wars Story. The latter was the second standalone film of the franchise, explaining the backstory behind characters like Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, and Chewbacca. But Solo was a box office disappointment, while The Last Jedi is arguably the most divisive film in the entire franchise.

But J.J Abrams is reportedly hoping to change this narrative, put the franchise back on a better course. Abrams is continuing to make massive deals, and a new report by Variety alleges that he's been tasked with putting the ultra-popular space opera back on track. There are no details as to how this might come about, but it should be fascinating to see how the galaxy far, far away continues to grow and change.

In the wake of Solo and The Last Jedi, it appears that Disney may be reevaluating its plans moving forward, in order to best service the fans and make oodles of money at the box office. Early rumors indicated that Star Wars may be abandoning their standalone movie plans, despite the massive success of Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. With Solo ultimately being a box office bust and chock full of bad press, it's unclear if any more spinoffs are going to be produced.

If J.J. Abrams is helping to get the Star Wars back on track through some "course correction", it should be wild to see exactly how the franchise changes with Episode IX and beyond. Perhaps he'll bring things back to basics, and tell a story that is a bit more classic than the purposefully subversive one Rian Johnson brought with The Last Jedi. And with Solo a victim of behind the scenes dramatics, Abrams should also bring a more focused an relaxed set.

Should J.J. Abrams be trying to undo the "damage' done by Rian Johnson in The Last Jedi, it may be in vain. Johnson has been hired to develop his own trilogy of Star Wars films, which will go into affect after Episode IX hits theaters.
